Access hosted email

Hosted email is accessible two ways. Note that hosted mail accounts must be created by jlauser.net staff.

Standalone mail client

You can use just about any standalone mail client to access hosted mail. The mail server supports encrypted IMAP and POP3 protocols. To configure your mail client, just point it at mail.jlauser.net for both incoming and outgoing connections. For incoming mail, you _must_ use SSL, and IMAP is highly recommended if your client supports it. For outgoing mail, you need to enable authentication, and should use SSL. It is also highly recommended that you use port 465 or 587 for outgoing mail, as many ISPs, hotels, and publicly accessible hotspots intercept outbound connections on port 25.

Any modern email client should work with the mail server. The following clients are known to be fully compatible:

  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Apple Mail
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Outlook Express
  • Novell Evolution

Additionally, the built-in email clients on the following mobile platforms are known to work:

  • Apple iPhone OS (Apple iPhone, Apple iPod Touch)
  • Palm webOS (Palm Pre, Palm Pixi)
  • Google Android (Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, HTC Google Nexus One)
  • Microsoft Windows Mobile / Windows Phone

If your client supports IMAP IDLE, you may wish to enable it. This will allow you to receive mail as soon as it is delivered to you, rather than having to wait for your client to poll for it.

Webmail

You can also access your mail from any web browser, by going to http://webmail.jlauser.net.
